About the Artist

Jane Weibel is in her last semester here at CSULB. She’s a part of the BFA Ceramics in the School of Arts. She’s had a variety of different pathways that she’s taken with her life and career ranging from being a biology student to a massage therapist for a while to a nutrition major and ended up choosing art and by the looks of it, she made the right decision. She’s not really someone to expose her thoughts or her feelings through art, but with this particular piece she was really able to portray those feelings she has towards this issue that arises in female’s lives present day.

Formal Analysis

This art piece was very colorful. I feel that everyone was pulled in to view the different attributes of this piece because of the many, many different colors and patterns that were put into it. She used different materials, like plastic, photographs, ceramics and paper and every single piece varied in different colors. The rocks were jagged, the photographs were clear and precise, the cage was very pattern based that with a lot of holes.

Content Analysis

Weibel is a feminist and she clearly stated that in her exhibition statement. She wanted to show how women are always invisible, overran, manipulated and ignored and through this piece she was able to. She wanted to show how women always seem to be stuck in a rut and to do so she had a picture of a woman in between a rock that is about to fall on it and a fire that is blazing under the photo. She always had an area where she put a pile of shredded colorful paper and it was meant to represent how women are constantly being destroyed and broken down.

Synthesis/My Experience

This exhibit was the first show that I walked into and as soon as I did, I knew this was the piece that I wanted to do my blog piece on. All of the colors and different surfaces that are all portrayed in this piece. She was able to really show how women are forgotten in the world today and show how men are in a sense “superior” to women and ultimately I find what she did with this piece to be extremely uplifting and powerful. She shows the emotions and feelings that women tend to have but are too afraid to say anything or never get the chance to say anything because the male society is more “important” in society. I really, really enjoyed this piece and the message it depicted because I feel it served as a voice for those particular women who don’t have or can’t use their voice.
